Change Your Behaviors to Promote Healthy Eating

Instead of focusing on dieting, get to know yourself and DISCover your relationship with food. Knowing the behaviors that cause overeating can be a powerful tool to encourage healthy eating habits and a sustainable lifestyle. The DISC tool, which stands for Dominant, Influencing, Steady, and Compliant, simplifies behavioral assessments by categorizing individuals as outgoing or reserved, task-oriented or people-oriented.

While eating habits may not necessarily “reveal” an individual’s personality type, they can certainly provide some insights into one’s personality behavior based on their preferences. For instance:

People who prefer spicy food may be more likely to be thrill-seekers and enjoy taking risks like the D-individuals who are assertive and willing.

A person who frequently chooses fast food or processed foods may value convenience over nutrition. This would be more in tuned with the I-Type personality who is outgoing, enthusiastic, and sociable.

Someone who eats slowly and savors their food may enjoy relaxation and taking their time to enjoy the experience. As a S-individuals, we tend to be calm, patient, and harmonious. I personally savor every bite of my food as though it’s my last.

Those who prefer bland food may be more risk-averse and prefer routine. Like the C-individual, they are very cautious and value accuracy. One can’t be disappointed if they have no expectation.

Then there are those individuals who are stress eaters and may be more likely to feel overwhelmed or anxious due to a crisis, while others can resist the urge to eat plus show greater control over their emotions.

Understanding your personality can help you make informed decisions about your health and wellness, such as:

>Identifying your approach to stress management: The assessment can help you determine how you cope with stress. For instance, if you’re a high-stress person, you might benefit from learning relaxation techniques or engaging in physical activities to manage stress.

>Evaluating your communication style: The DISC assessment can help you understand your communication style and how you interact with others. This knowledge can help you better understand how to communicate with your healthcare providers, family members, and friends, which can improve your overall wellbeing.

>Recognizing your eating habits: The assessment can help you understand how you approach eating and if you’re prone to emotional eating. Understanding these behaviors can help you make conscious choices about what, when, and how much you eat.

However, it’s important to remember that the assessment is just a tool, and you should always consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
